Exploring Adaptation Through
Shape, Pattern, & Colour
Pioneers of Nature is a college concept project created in response to a brief for the Natural History Museum’s newest exhibition. The project explores shape, pattern, and colour through three insects, the leaf bug, stick bug, and dead leaf butterfly, highlighting how their unique forms have evolved as a method of camouflage and survival. The work focuses on observing natural design systems and translating them into a cohesive visual narrative.
The illustrated designs were then adapted into a range of marketing and merchandise assets for the exhibition. This involved translating detailed illustrations into formats suitable for posters, signage, and retail items, while maintaining consistency across different scales and applications. The process explored how visual elements can be flexibly applied across promotional materials, reinforcing the exhibition’s identity while remaining clear, engaging, and accessible to a wider audience.
